OCTOBER 2009
From the President’s desk. . .
BUSY TO THE END!! That’s right...it’s almost the end of 2009 and the Parkland Friends are gearing up for two big events: the 2010 Membership Drive in November and the Gifts for Readers event in December.
Our 2010 Membership Drive is a joint effort with the Parkland Friends of the Library and TD Bank. The friends established a banking relationship with TD Bank in August for several reasons: TD Bank is the most convenient bank in the area with many branches already in the area and more opening soon, including a location at 441 across from Holmberg Road; the personnel in the branches are very helpful and friendly; and finally, because TD Bank has an Affinity Program that will allow the Friends to receive funds from TD Bank based on a percentage of the average daily balance of all accounts that affiliate with the Friends. It can be a new account (and TD Bank will give $25 to open a new checking account) or if you already have an account at TD Bank, just tell them to affiliate it with the Friends. So our membership renewal for 2010 will arrive with lots of information about TD Bank. Residents have an opportunity to help the Friends while receiving excellent banking services. Most importantly, it’s time to renew your membership or join the Friends for the first time to help the Friends enhance our Library’s wonderful selection of events and programs.
Our second event is the Gifts for Readers event to be held Thursday, December 3, 2009 from 4 in the afternoon until 7 in the evening. We had such terrific feedback after last year’s event; we just knew we had to do it again. Some of the vendors from last year will be back again and there will be new vendors too. In addition to authors, booksellers and craft vendors, the friends will be selling the used books and will offer their gift wrapping services so that all your purchases can leave wrapped and ready to give. And our coffee bar will be open for business and have some yummy holiday treats for sale. Take a few minutes and come by to check out the wares and the treats. Who knows- you could leave with your holiday shopping list finished!
The Friends will start the New Year with a general meeting on January 12, 2010. The January meeting is when the membership takes a look at the 2009 year and decides what direction the new year should take for the organization. Remember every member is a stakeholder in the corporation and the Board leads as you, the members, indicate. Come to the January meeting prepared to tell the Board what you liked that we did during 2009 and what you feel we could do better or differently in 2010.

Suzi’s Spot. . .
It’s the time of year when we collect statistics on the past 12 month’s activities.
The Library’s business increased 20% in most categories. In one area, over the past 2 years, the staff interactions with patrons (answering questions) is up 45%. This can be stressful.
However, it is all worthwhile when we receive a letter such as the one that arrived just a few days ago, telling us what a difference the Library has made in the life of a family member. It included a donation to the Friends, in the person’s honor, to help carry on our events.
The support of Friends like you makes a difference to us, so once again, I say ‘Thank You’!

Editor's Note. . .
Hi Friends,
No autumn leaves and no snow to follow, but the holiday
season is upon us. Halloween this Saturday and
Thanksgiving and Christmas to follow.
The October Annual Meeting on Health Care Reform with a
panel of four Medical Experts was interesting and
informative. It was held at Aston Gardens. Members are
always invited to attend Board Meetings and the General
Meetings are always especially interesting.
We are holding Raffles at some of the Book Sales, and we
will have one at the “Gift for Readers Event”. This is a
Chinese Auction. Tickets are $1.00 each or six for
$5.00. You do not need to be present to win. If you win a
prize, I will telephone you that you won. You can pick up
your item at the Library.

Library Book Sale. . .
The Book Sale is held every 2nd Saturday of the month in the foyer of the Library from 10AM to 1PM.
A very special thanks to Nancy deMena. She has volunteered to take over the job of selecting the books, getting the tables set up and dismantling after the sale.
Thank you to the teen volunteers who help her to setup and dismantle after the sale.
Please bring your contributions of books, CDs, DVDs, and videos to the Library.
